Now, you can also participate in Ocean Missions’ local projects in Húsavík and the surrounding areas!

Volunteer position

We are beyond thrilled to announce that Ocean Missions is offering two volunteer positions for 2023. We are overwhelmed and full of excitement at the same time to receive many requests from motivated people that want to be part of the ocean missions. Therefore, we decided to put “all hands-on deck” to work towards making these dreams come true. Today, thanks to the support of the University of Iceland’s Húsavík Research Centre, this has become a reality and we can’t wait to see you in action with us.

Together, we are the change!

This is the UN decade for the oceans and it is a unique opportunity to work on ocean conservation and make a difference for the planet. This volunteer program has been created with care, love and responsibility in order to provide you with the best experiences and skills to help with the development of your professional career.

Requirements

The program is mainly directed at University students with an environmental background or similar who want to arrange their internship in Iceland as a part of their official student program through the University of Iceland’s Húsavík Research Centre and Ocean Missions. The program is also available as a professional experience for graduates with other backgrounds. So, if you feel that you fit the profile you are more than welcome to apply.

We are looking for two highly motivated and hardworking souls with positive energy to join us in accomplishing Ocean Missions’ environmental goals for 2023. Preferred dates would be from May – September. Previous sailing experience, involving ocean research and/or conservation is not mandatory but helpful to scale steps during the selection process. Other additional skills in digital marketing, video making, scientific writing, storytelling or fundraising are highly valuable but not mandatory.

Get involved!

The majority of the activities will involve: public outreach at our mini lab, boat-based fieldwork on microplastic & zooplankton communities, beach clean-ups, public surveys, interviews, acoustics, whale photo-ID and data analysis. Depending on the skills, the volunteers could help with the internal work of the organization: video making, digital marketing, fundraising, scientific redaction, etc.*

If you have any particular interest, or you want to elaborate your own project, we are happy to hear your proposals.

Volunteer/Internship program positions are currently open for 2023 and the deadline for applications is 31st January 2023. The final decision will be published latest by mind of February 2023.

If you are interested, you can send a letter of motivation and your CV to us at: info@oceanmissions.org
If you would like to receive more details about the program, do not hesitate to contact us.

We will be waiting for you in our lovely whale town, looking forward hearing from you!

University of Iceland’s Research Center!

Every year the University of Iceland’s Research Center also offers internships positions for students to come to Iceland for few months to participate in whale research. Being part of a Photo Identification Team on the whale watching boats gives you the opportunity to contribute to the whale catalogue that researchers have been working on here for more than 15 years!

You can also explore the acoustic world of dolphins and whales in the bay or sign up for the excellent Annual Marine Mammal Course that occurs here annually in June!
