The Hope Expedition – Monitoring Sensitive Arctic Coasts I North Iceland
Each summer, an expedition begins into the Arctic to survey the Arctic and coastal areas around Skjalfandi Bay and Eyjafjörður in North Iceland, where huge numbers of migratory whales call home. One of the most pristine places in the world, the threat of modern microplastics brought along by intercontinental currents bring a threat not just for these whales but also various other species, such as seabirds and fish. Through greater monitoring, the team at Ocean Missions aspire to help canvas, survey and document our changing Arctic, to spread greater visibility and awareness into the challenges of our world, while saving the environment – one beach, at a time. This short video highlights their flagship project, the Hope Expedition, where a few worldwide volunteers participate to become Advocates, and learn more about the ocean, as well as more about themselves.
Together with various partners such as Tilvera Expeditions, North Sailing, Scidrones and the University of Iceland, the Hope Expedition brings together the very best minds in ocean and environmental science, all to deliver one message – to save our seas. This project was filmed by Young K. Hwang (@life_in_documentaries), film maker, OM ocean ambassador participant on our last Iceland Hope expedition (24 – 30th June 2025).
